Daniel Callanan is a Senior Member of the American Society
of Appraisers and a Director of Valuation Services for ComStock Valuation
Advisor’s Columbus, Ohio office. Dan has extensive background in the
investment management of positions in closely held companies and partnerships,
including evaluating their investment characteristics and the disposition of
these securities. In addition, he has assisted clients with investment banking
activities regarding the sale of their businesses. The primary focus of his
professional work has been on valuing closely held securities for gift and
estate tax planning and Employee Stock Ownership Plans (“ESOP”). As part of
his ESOP work, he frequently conducted feasibility studies and handled the
implementation and annual valuation updates.
Prior to joining ComStock, Dan was the national Director
of Valuation Services for Bank One, the nations fifth largest banking
institution. Dan’s duties included managing the valuation process and
coordinating the implementation and sale of ESOPs for which Bank One was
Trustee. In addition, he prepared gift and estate tax valuations used in
determining federal transfer tax obligations. A significant portion of his
duties at Bank One included the determination of value for the sale of privately
held, minority positions in companies and partnerships. As part of those duties
he represented beneficiaries of Bank One personal trust accounts who sought to
liquidate their minority positions in closely held companies. Dan has also worked for Willamette Management Associates,
a national valuation and economic consulting firm headquartered in Chicago,
Illinois. While employed with Willamette, Dan was responsible for managing
valuation engagements and assisted the firm with business development.
In each of the years he was with the firm, Dan was bestowed with the Standard
of Excellence a national award granted to the firms’ most valuable
employees. Prior to joining Willamette, he worked in the litigation support
group of a public accounting firm where he had extensive experience in valuing a
wide variety of intangible assets and intellectual property. He is currently a Senior Member of the American Society of
Appraisers, a member of the ESOP Association and The Columbus Estate Planning
Council. Dan has been a member of the Business Valuation Association and the
Association of Investment Management Research.
In addition, Dan was instrumental in forming the Family Business
Solutions School at The Ohio State University’s Executive Education Program. Dan is on the Board of Directors for Sterling Bank Group,
a community bank in South Florida. He is the Chairman of the Investment
Committee and is a member of the Audit and Mergers and Acquisitions committees. Dan earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Management from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. He is a graduate from the University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business with a Masters of Business Administration having concentrations in Finance and Managerial Strategy.
